For the past three years my 79 year old mother had been living in the mountains of NC but this fall she needed to move here to the area so I could support her.
{The Senior Hub Note: Jamie's mother, Carolyn, was living independently before medical needs complicated her situation}
Starting at "ground zero," I literally called and researched places for over 40 hours and had no leads or any answers.
A friend asked me how my week was going and I told them my dilemma regarding needing to move my mom here and she jotted down The Senior Hub contact information and said "they can help you."
{The Senior Hub note: Jamie called Rebecca at The Senior Hub. Based on information from the hospital, Jamie thought her mother needed Assisted Living level support. However, Rebecca recognized that given Carolyn’s cognitive health and the likelihood of recovering physically, Independent Living with supports in place was her better option. In fact, heading to Assisted Living (AL) could have caused Carolyn to backtrack, as staff at AL are required to provide skills that would have limited Carolyn’s participation in her own activities and mobility. This guidance was a game changer for Carolyn. Rebecca suggested a specific Independent Living community and indicated which in-house supports Carolyn needed for her recovery.}
I called and told you our story and you guided me to the exact place that my mom needed. My mom loves her living arrangement. She is thriving.
I didn’t even know that this arrangement was possible and wouldn’t have known had I not gotten your contact information. She has met a wonderful group of friends, enjoys eating with them and joining in the activities but especially enjoys playing Rummikub with them every day and sometimes twice a day!! She calls me every night when she gets back to her room to let me know she’s back. Every night she tells me what a good day she has had.
